Green Visionary Artistry: Dance of the Elements and Choreographing Environmental Action
Thessaloniki, Greece
Between 11 and 14 May 2026, FAJUB, together with the European partners of the project Green Visionary Artistry – A Tapestry of Environmental Expression, took part in the sixth international meeting of the project, held in Thessaloniki, Greece. Dedicated to the theme “Dance of the Elements and Choreographing Environmental Action,” the meeting explored dance and movement as forms of artistic expression connected to nature, sustainability, and environmental awareness.
Hosted by the Greek organisation Fifty Fifty, the activities brought together participants from different European countries in a space of collaborative creation, artistic reflection, and intercultural exchange. Throughout the meeting, movement became a shared language through which participants explored different relationships between body, environment, and creative expression.
The first part of the programme was guided by Eleni Vaka, Greek choreographer from Terpsichorus, who led sessions focused on movement inspired by the natural elements. Through guided exercises and collective practices, participants explored ways of translating rhythms, dynamics, and sensations associated with nature into movement and choreographic creation.
The meeting focused on the use of dance as a tool for expression and communication, encouraging collaboration among participants from different cultural backgrounds. The different sessions allowed participants to develop small collective creations inspired by environmental themes and by the relationship between community and nature. The use of recycled materials in the creation of some performative elements further reinforced the connection between artistic expression and sustainability.
The programme also included collective presentation moments, during which participants shared the creative processes developed throughout the meeting and reflected on the role of art and movement in raising awareness about environmental issues. The closing moment, “Promise to the Planet,” invited each participant to share one concrete environmental commitment to integrate into their daily lives, reinforcing the collective and participatory dimension of the meeting.
For FAJUB and the project partners, the meeting in Thessaloniki demonstrated how dance and movement can bring together participants from different cultural backgrounds, creating spaces for communication and exchange beyond language barriers, while also reinforcing the role of artistic expression in raising awareness about environmental issues and sustainability.
